The average Real Simple reader is unlikely to know who Daisuke Matsuzaka is. ESPN readers, however, probably already know a few of his baseball stats from Japan, where he was a pitching ace before being drafted in the international draft by the Boston Red Sox. I tried to dwell on a few of these specific sports facts when I began the process of spinning a single story item as if it were published in these very different magazines. ESPN readers only need the team names, as they already know which cities the teams are associated with –not true for Real Simple readers, even though both sets of readers need to know where their spring training homes are.
While the readers of both magazines may both enjoy a trip to spring training, their motivation to do so, as well as other mitigating factors, would influence their decision of where they go, and what else they’d do once they were there. ESPN readers are more likely to enjoy other sports along the way, such as golf (I highlighted several courses at both destinations), and are more likely interested in knowing which teams are where –outside of their home team, which they’re more likely to already know. Based on my observations, Real Simple readers, on the other hand are more likely female and interested in other factors on the trip. One such item would be climate and conditions, so I included temperatures and rainfall for the possible destinations, and another item might be non-sports interests on their vacation, such as the national parks I listed for each destination.
